95 <br />SPECIAL SELECTMEN'S MEETING <br />February 19, 1949 <br />A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was <br />held on Saturday, February 19, 1949, at 10;30 A.M. <br />There were present: Chairman Paxton, Messrs. Emery, <br />Driscoll and Nickerson. The Clerk was also present. <br />Mi`. Gay arrived later. <br />Mr. Donnelly and Mr. Roeder of the Fire Engineers <br />met with the Board. The Chairman explained that these <br />two individuals had been invited to discuss further their <br />budget for 1949. <br />Mr. Donnelly explained that the Fire tJnderwftters <br />have been consulted and that they are opposed to having <br />call men used to enable the department to operate seventy <br />hours a week. He said that with three additional menthe <br />Engineers can shorten the hours but no schedule has as yet <br />been made out: <br />The Chairman asked if the appropriation is passed Fire <br />by Town Meeting when the Engineers would have a new Depot. <br />schedule. The Chairman asked if the Engineers could Hours <br />meet with the Board of Selectmen when they have a schedule ( 70) <br />worked out and Mr. Donnelly replied in the affirmative. <br />Mr. Emery asked if the Engineers were opposed to <br />volunteer help or parttime help to sleep in the fire <br />station. Mr. Donnelly said he would be in favor of it <br />if it were possible to get call men who could be depended <br />upon, but he did not know whether they could get men to <br />work on that basis. He explained that the call men they <br />have already conferred with would not agree to anything <br />like that. Mr. Emery asked who consulted the underwriters <br />and Mr. Donnelly informed him that it was Mr. Fawcett. <br />Mr. finery asked if they had a reply in writ$ng and Mr. <br />Donnelly, replied in the negative. <br />Mr. Emery said he feels that the Engineers can give <br />a seventy hour week with three men in addition to volunteer <br />help and he believes that all the members of the Board of <br />Selectmen are in favor of a seventy hour week. <br />Mr. Donnelly said he felt something could be worked <br />out with some additional men, to the satisfaction of the <br />regular men.
