BOARD OF APPEALS
November 9, 1978
The Board of Appeals met at 7:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room
for the purpose of making a decision in regard to the request of Anthony R.
Cataldo for renewal of permission to process and sell fruits and vegetables
at premises located at Gold Ribbon Farms, 1265 Massachusetts Avenue, and
also to discuss any other matters which may come before the Board.
The public hearing in regard to this request was held on October 26, 1978.
Decision was deferred to November 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The picture for the annual town report for 1978 was taken at 7:30, immedi-
ately prior to discussion with respect to 1265 Mass. Ave. Eight Board members
were present:
George P. Wadsworth, Chairman
Ruth Morey, Vice Chairman
Irving H. Mabee
Thomas G. Taylor
Woodruff M. Brodhead
Robert M. Bowyer, Associate
Natalie H. Riffin, Associate
Clarence D. Turner, Associate
The Chairman reviewed the request and the evidence given.
Findings: The Board found that there were four distinct businesses being conducted
at 1265 Mass. Ave. Under Gold Ribbon Farms there are two operations, the Celery
Processing Plant being considered in this petition, and a wholesale nursery and
greenhouse operation independent of the Celery Processing Plant. This nursery and
greenhouse operation is utilizing more than 5 acres -in its own right and has as
clients the wholesale market in Boston and chain stores. Gold Ribbon Farms has
leased to Gold Star Wholesale Nursery, Inc., which operates a wholesale business
on the property but it has a subsidiary which sells at retail on the premises also
and is known as Seasons Four.
The current request is to continue a business begun 30 years ago with Board of
Appeals approval and constitutes that portion of Gold Ribbon Farms only dealing
with the celery processing operations. The Board unanimously agreed that making
Mr. Cataldo responsible for trucking violations of all four operations may be un-
reasonable and cannot solve trucking problems. Each one of the four enterprises
should be responsible for its own conduct.
Decision filed with the Town Clerk.
1265 Mass. Ave. — granted unanimously with conditions. (see decision for
details.)
Other business
The Board discussed the proposed Warrant Articles for changes in the zoning
1 by-law and a proposed new sign by-law. Tennis Courts, swimming pools and
aeeessory apartments were discussed. No formal action was taken by the Board.
Respectfully submitted,
Evelyn F. Cole, Administrative Clerk
BOARD OF APPEALS
