SELFCTMEN?S MEETING <br />' JANUARY 6, 1939. <br />A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held <br />in the Selectments Room, Town Office Building, at 7:00 <br />P.M. Chairman Giroux and Messrs. Potter, Ross and Rowse <br />were present. The Clerk was also present. <br />The Clerk was instructed to list the salaries of the Salaries <br />various department heads for the last five years. <br />Joseph A. Ross, Supt. of Water and Sewer, appeared <br />before the Board at 8;00 P.M. <br />He stated that he was requesting a salary of $3120. <br />' per year, and considered this an adjustment rather than <br />an increase. He requested an increase of $2.00 per week <br />for Miss Hayes, and an increase of $3.00 per week for Miss <br />Harvey. He said that there was a balance of $490, in the <br />Sewer Maintenance Appropriation, and this would have been <br />Mr. John T. Cosgrove, Town Engineer, appeared before <br />the Board to discuss his budget for 1939. He stated that <br />it was practically the same as in 1938, but he was still <br />requesting that he be returned to $60.00 per week instead Engineering <br />of 03j,00O. per year. Under Expenses, he said he was re- Budget <br />questing $50.00 for a filing clerk, which would pay for <br />overtime clerical help. This clerk would take care of <br />some of his correspondence, file, do his report, etc. Mr. <br />Cosgrove said that he was requesting no increases in salaries. <br />With regard to his own salary, he said that in July, 1937, <br />his salary was not restored to what it was before the salary <br />cut, and the Selectmen told him that he would have it res- <br />tored in March, 1939. The Selectmen recommended this, but <br />the Appropriation Committee did not approve it. <br />Mr. Cosgrove said that the Expenses item was $5.00 <br />less than he requested last year. Last year he asked for <br />enough money to purchase six tires and tubes, and this was <br />out down to two. Therefor,. it will be necessary to furnish <br />$75.00 this year in order to purchase the necessary tires <br />and tubes. He said that his stock was depleted, and he would <br />have $325. under the Field and Office item to purchase more. <br />He said he was asking $100. for Engineers' stakes, as <br />compared with $80.00 for 1938. Mr. Cosgrove said that he <br />spent more than $80.00 for stakes this year, and thought <br />that $100. should be'provided for this item. <br />Mr. Cosgrove said that the $25.00 requested for auto- <br />mobile allowance covered the use of an employee's car when <br />It was necessary to use one extra car, and the employee is <br />reimbursed at the rate of five cents a mile. Such a car is <br />used only in unusual cases. <br />The Chairman asked Mr. Cosgrove to reconsider his <br />budget and try to bring it down to last year's figure.
