RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF <br />WEBSTER SMITH. <br />WHEREAS, By the decree of an all -wise Providence, after a long, <br />hard battle with a wasting disease, aur fellow townsman, Mr. Webster <br />Smith, has been called to the higher life beyond the grave, where suf- <br />fering, pain and trouble no longer afflict, and where the reward has <br />come which has awaited the culmination of a grand, noble, useful life, <br />devoted to public spirit in its highest sense, to good citizenship in the <br />broadest possible measure, and to the cultivation of the sterling man- <br />hood in its best development, and <br />WHEREAS, The town as a body has had occasion far many years to <br />rely on the clear-headed, far-seeing judgment of this remarkable public <br />officer, and to feel the greatest confidence in his personal honor and <br />integrity, an well as to glory in the firmness, determination and cour- <br />age which has characterized his official acts for two generations; be it <br />RESOLVED, That the example of such a life is a standard set like a <br />star for the emulation of all public servants in the present and future; <br />that the self-sacrificing devotion to duty and the courageous exemplifi- <br />cation of the manly qualities which earned the endearment of friends <br />and the complete respect of foes, has left us with an indebtedness to <br />his memory that time cannot efface and that no consideration can re- <br />pay; that his especial service to the town during the dark days of the <br />civil war as Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, where responsibili- <br />ties were created in an hour and precedents were established in a day, <br />cannot be overestimated or too highly valued; that every board of <br />town government can appreciate in the fullest degree the many land- <br />marks of decision, opinion and action bequeathed in our records, di- <br />rectly emanating from his hand and brain; and, be it further <br />RESOLVED, That in placing upon our records this official recognition <br />of his worth, ability and manhood, the town of Lexington is paying <br />but simple justice to the memory of Webster Smith. <br />EDWIN S.
