2015 Minuteman Cane Award Committee Meeting March 31, 2015 1:00 pm in the Parker Room in the Town Office Building The meeting was called to order at 1:03 pm. All committee members were present: Marie Hill, Chairman Dot Boggia, Vice Chairman Beverly Kelley Hank Manz Leo McSweeney Dick Michelson Joyce Murphy Ann Webster, Secretary David Williams Eleanor Smith (2013 recipient) Shirley Lane (2014 recipient) The meeting began with the committee welcoming new members Shirley Lane, Hank Manz and Joyce Murphy. Minutes of the 2014 meeting were approved as written. In other housekeeping, the committee shared current contact information and discussed the possibility of delaying the start of future meetings to avoid the shortage of parking spaces at lunchtime. Discussion of the nominees came next. Five nominations were received this year, for Claude Brenner, Donald Martin, Anne (Jerri) O'Neill, Joyce Miller, and John Frey. Three other nominees also were considered: 2014 first and second runners up, Phyllis Rand and Wilda Ward, and Dick Michelson; Dick withdrew his 2014 nomination, and the rest of the committee voted to hold it until 2015. With appreciation, Dick asked to defer his nomination again. Claude also was eliminated from consideration because he had passed away in early March and the Cane is not awarded posthumously. The committee reviewed each of the remaining six candidates and took a secret written vote. John was the winner. Joyce and Donald were first and second runners-up, respectively. The Cane will be awarded to John on Patriots' Day, April 20. The reception for recipients of the White Tricorn Hat, Minuteman Cane and Outstanding Youth awards will be 2-4 pm on Sunday, April 26 at the Depot. Our committee is responsible for baked goods/cookies. David and Ann will notify John about the award. Ann will coordinate with Chris Filadoro so they may surprise John in the next Tree Committee meeting, and David will work with Lynne Pease to prepare the proclamation from the Selectmen. Marie will get the cane from Theatre Pharmacy engraved and the Senior Center plaque updated; she also will coordinate with our reception partners and ask John Carroll if we can use his convertible in the parade.
