<br />Lexington Human Rights Committee <br />Meeting Minutes <br />Oct 7, 2016 <br />Present <br />: Lieutenant Jim Barry, Judy Crocker, Norman Cohen, Mary Barry-Ng, Sean <br />OsborneLinda Vine, Koren Stembridge, Al Zabin, Kristie Demirev, Fuang-Ying Huang, <br />, <br />Pastor Brent Maracle, and Tanya Gisolfi <br />Meeting held at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 at 8:00 a.m. <br />Committee welcomed guest Ms. Tonya Gisolfi of 20/20’s Asian Culture sub committee <br />Ms. Gisolfi briefed the committee on meetings with three representatives from Walnut <br />Valley School in CA. WVS has very similar diversity student body as LHS’s with higher <br />percentage of Asian students. The representatives met with school committee and town <br />officials, and presented diversity and outreach programs at WVS. <br />Carry Library celebrated its newly finished renovation on Oct 15. The Library will <br />distribute the flyers for the book discussion on “Common Ground.” The events’ detail is <br />also on HRC’s website. <br />The attendance for 911 Remembrance gathering was lower this year according to Pastor <br />Maracle. It may need more advertising on the event or people started to have fatigue 15 <br />years after the horrific event. <br />Culture conflicts at schools. A Native American student was denied to be addressed by <br />his Mohawk name, and an African American student was called the N-word. The <br />committee discussed how the school faculties can better handle the situations and be <br />more sensitive and respectful to students’ diverse backgrounds. <br />Department Reports: <br />Human Service Dept. <br />1.With the help of Lion Club, Rotary Club and local commerce, HSD kick <br />start the holiday programs such as Halloween costumes, Thanks Giving <br />dinners, and Christmas gifts as well as the winter full assistance for <br />families in need. <br />2.Halloween Game Night for middle and high school students on Oct. 28. <br />3.Youth Consuls hosting college application workshop on Nov. 05. <br />School Dept. <br />Clark Middle school starts a program for social and emotional wellbeing. <br />Police Dept. <br />Break-in at Greek church. <br /> <br />
