Lexington Tree Committee
Town of Lexington, Massachusetts
201 Bedford Street, Samuel Hadley Public Services Building, Room 125
Minutes, Meeting of July 14, 2016
Attendees: Nancy Sofen, Jewel Kuljian, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, John Frey (Chairman),
Ginna Johnson (Planning Board liaison). Gerry Paul took his turn as scribe.
1. Approve last month's meeting minutes -- postponed.
2. Tree removal activity — postponed.
3. We reviewed the guidance to home owners on watering of setback trees and agreed that the
information in the "watering letter" was appropriate.
4. Tree inventory - We discussed possible use of Google docs to allow more up -to -date
information and better sharing of committed trees. It was agreed that we could use a hybrid
approach initially (Google Docs + emails to Julie). Gerry will create a test sheet for
experimentation.
Anne noted that the setback -tree workload this Spring was much more manageable because of
involvement of additional Tree Committee members.
5 . Damaged Honey Locust at Lexington Toyota. John (with possibly another TC member) will
contact Lexington Toyota owner and suggest pruning the tree to save it. If tree is not pruned,
we will consider sending a letter to Lexington Toyota (with copy to ZBA which required planting
of these trees).
6. Oak at 524 Concord Ave. No further action.
7. Visitor center tree replacement - we will discuss Karen's draft plan at our next meeting.
8. June 3 /July.1 tree hearings. John and Gerry reported on the tree hearings and subsequent
reviews with John Livsey and Dave Cannon at which, after constructive discussion, no
objections were raised.
9. Tree planting on Mass. Ave between Bloomfield and Percy - postponed.
10. Report on 7/7/16 HDC hearing for East Mass Ave road reconstruction - John reported that
the proposals for species to be planted (thanks to hard work by John, Nancy and Karen) were
accepted by the consultant for the project, BCS.
11. Tree Bylaw changes - Nancy, Karen and Gerry will discuss ideas on July 20 .
12. Jewel is working on a plan for replacement of the Sourwood tree screen on Meriam St.
Committee members are looking forward to supporting it.
Next regular meeting: August 11, 7:30 a.m. at DPW.
