Town of Lexington
c. a."
)
3
Alan Fields
Chairman Trustees of Public Trusts
10 Marshal Road
Lexington, MA 02173
Dear Alan:
f 5
May 14, 19.92
sl
v
Enclosed for your review and approval is a recommendation from Park and
Tree Superintendent, Dale Gaasland, relativ'd -to a proposal for the treatment of
the Minuteman Statue.
The Center for the Conservation and Technical Studies Conservator, Henry
Lie, has offered two options for the cleaning and treatment of the memorial. As
you know the statue was vandalized with red paint in April of 1991. Although the
bulk of the paint was removed some small spots remain. Mr. Lie performed the
initial cleaning and recommended that further treatment would be beneficial.
Option A of Mr. Lie's proposal would clean and restore the statue to it's
original bronze color while option B would provide a similar cleansing process
and leave the statue with the same green tint that it has now.
Dale sought estimates for this restoration work from two other sources but
did not receive a response to his telephone calls.
I support Dale's recommendation. The statue has been the same color as
long as I can remember and every photo or painting of the memorial that I have
seen has reflected it's current green tint. Once this process has been completed
we will develop a yearly maintenance schedule for the statue. The enclosed
proposal of the Conservator of $4,276.00 represents the amount of funding needed
from the Trustees to complete this project. leases contact me al-Tour earldest
convenience at 861 -2752 between the hours of 8:30 am. and 4:30 pm.
