THE LEXINGTON HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Lexington, Massachusetts 02173
Meeting
Room 111 June 15, 1976
Lexington Town Office Building 7 30 P.M.
Voting Members Pfesent : Chairman Elizabeth Reinhardt, Anne Grady,
Richard Morehouse, Donna Brown
Guests: Spencer Lavan, Samayla Deutch, Sarah Chase.
The meeting was called to order at 7 :40 by the chairman. It was ann-
ounced that Thomas Taylor will be resigning from the commission, effective
at once. The guests, invited to attend by the chairman were interviewed
on an informal basis. We will make a recomendation to the Town Manager
for a replacement of Mr. Taylor.
The chairman informed the commission that the Esterbrook School is re-
writing their unit on Architecture and we could offer our assistance in SOCIAL STUDIES
this effort. Tt was voted to do so. UNIT
We discussed the replacement of the flag pole on the Green, the base of
which is thought to be about 15 feet in diameter and probable 14 feet deep.
Due to the size of the excavaton _which will probably occur there is in- BATTLE
terest in the possibility of unearthing some artifacts. After consulting GREEN
with the Mass Historical Comm. it seems unnecessary to sift everything but FLAG
it would be advantageous to hire an Archaeology student (@ $40.00 per hr.) POLE
to be on hand. Mrs. Grady will check on the exact cost of a student and Mrs.
Reinhardt will discuss this with Mr. Michelson to see if the Bi-Centennial
Commission could pay for this as well. The new pole is to be stainless
steel.
Mrs. Reinhardt and Mrs. Grady attended the Annual Meeting of Architectural
Historians in Philadelphia. They will submit a written report. Mrs. Rein- PHILADELPHIA
hardt has taken many slides of the areas on tour.
The Historic Districts Commission has provided us with a map with the proposed
changes in the circle at Mass. Ave. and Pleasant St. We were concerned with EAST
the changes in stop and walk lights. It was decided to check on the date for LEX.
the hearing so our opinion can be expressed on possible impact. CIRCLE
Mrs. Reinhardt had an inquiry from Dr. Kassler for us to comment on desirable TOWN
qualities for a new Town Manager. No specific action was voted. MANAGER
COMMENTS
