LEXINGTON DESIGN ADVISORY COMMITTEE
February 6, 2006
To: Board of Appeals
Re: 396 Waltham Street- Mobil Service Station
Freestanding Sign.
At its regular meeting on February 1, 2006, the DAC reviewed a submittal for a new freestanding sign
at the Mobil Service Station. The new sign is proposed to replace the existing 15'-7" freestanding sign
at the corner of Waltham Street and Marrett Road. The sign appears to be out of the "site line triangle"
and therefore not present a hazard to motorists.
Mr. Steven Pedro of Ayoub Engineering, Inc. presented the new sign design. The proposal was for a
27' freestanding sign. The DAC commented that a sign of this size was not appropriate for a
neighborhood service station. The discussion quickly moved on to a second sign design Mr. Pedro had
with him which showed a 22'-2 3/4" high sign. Although lower than the initial sign proposal, this sign
was still considerably higher than the existing sign. The DAC is also concerned with the amount of
information being presented on the sign, especially the panel displaying the letters "ATM". The DAC
feels that the sign should not be significantly higher than the existing sign nor should it be much higher
than the existing service station canopy which is roughly 16'+/-.
The Design Advisory Committee recommends this project be approved at the 16' height without the
ATM sign panel and encourages the replacement of the adjacent street tree that was cut down.
Respectfully submitted,
Colin P. Smith AIA, Chairman
Lexington Design Advisory Committee
Cc: Board of Selectmen
