<br /> Whereas: September is known globally as Suicide Prevsntion Month and throughout the month mentalhealth advocates,
<br /> prevention organizations,survivors,allies,and community members uzute to pramote suicide prevention
<br /> awareness;and
<br /> Whereas: National Suicide Prevention Week is held the Monday through Sunday sunounding World Suicide Prevention
<br /> Day wluch is observed on September 10 and overall,these nbservances are intended to promote awareness,
<br /> and highlight resources available in our communities and shaze stories;and
<br /> Whereas: the simple goals are to learn how to help thase araund us and how to talk about suicide without increasing the
<br /> risk of har�n;and
<br /> Whereas: suicide can affect anyone regardless of age,ability,gender,race,selcual orientatian,income level,religion or
<br /> backgraund;and it is overall the 14�`leading cause af death in the United States and the second leading cause
<br /> of death for people ages 10-34;and
<br /> Whereas: people in the United States die by suicide at a rate of about one death every 11 rninutes resulting in more
<br /> than 48,000 deaths by suicide each year;and
<br /> Wh,ereas: suicide is preventable and we all have a role to play in order ta save lives and create healthyand strong
<br /> individuals,families,and communities;and
<br /> Whereas: many factars can increase the risk for suicide.For example,people wha have experiencedviolence,including
<br /> child abuse,bullying,and/or sexual vialence,are at a higher risk of suicide.Youth who are lesbian,gay,ar
<br /> bisexual also have higher rates of suicidal ideation and behaviar compared to their peers who identify as
<br /> straight;and
<br /> K'hereas: we encaurage all residents to take the tirne to inquire as to the wellbeing of their family,friends,and neighbors
<br /> during this month and to$enuinely canvey their appreciation for their existence by any gesture they deem
<br /> appropriate.
<br /> Nt)W, THEREFORE, WE, THE SELECT'BUARD af the Town of Lexingtan,Massachusetts,da hereby proclaim the month af
<br /> September to be annually recognized as
<br /> Suicide Preventian Month
<br /> in the Tawn of Lexington as we work together to save lives in our community.
