Town of Lexington
Commission on Disability
Victoria Buckley, Chair
June 7, 2014
Thomas Hopkins, Director
Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Department of Public Safety
Architectural Access Board
One Ashburton Place, Room 1310
Boston, MA 02198-1618
RE: Josiah Willard Hayden Recreation Centre
Dear Mr. Hopkins,
At the monthly meeting held on June 5, 2014, the Commission on Disability
reviewed the AAB application for variance for the second floor men’s room of the
Josiah Willard Hayden Recreation Centre, 24 Lincoln Street, Lexington. The
not
Commission is in favor of this variance.
We disagree that a variance is warranted since the architectural plans seem
to indicate that there is enough room for one urinal and one fully accessible stall, if
the plans were to be changed from two stalls to one. We are in full support of how
far the Hayden Recreation Centre has come in its past attempts to become more
accessible, especially the revocations in 2011 that installed elevators and made
sure there were passageways and ramps to make levels accessible. We encourage
Hayden to see if reducing the number of stalls in the men’s room is viable.
Please feel free to contact the chairperson at 617-997-5472 if there are any
questions or if this should be on the next meeting’s agenda. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Victoria Buckley, Chair
1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE • LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420
