Town of Lexington
Commission on Disability
Victoria Buckley, Chair
December 13, 2011
Ms. Karen Mullins, Administrator
Town of Lexington
Conservation Commission
RE: NOI 2013 & 2027 Massachusetts Avenue
Additions, Parking and Driveway Alterations
Dear Ms. Mullins and Members of the Commission,
Upon review of the plans for the Inn at Hastings Park, at 2013 and 2027
Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, the Commission on Disability has noted that
the plans propose using the handicapped parking spaces for snow storage areas.
This is in violation of the ADA and inappropriate. Handicapped spaces must be
kept clear of snow and ice and should not be used as snow dump sites. The snow
problem needs to be solved in another way, such as using non-handicapped spaces
as temporary storage or having a designated spot with fewer parking spaces to
accommodate the storage area. Individuals with disabilities need to have safe,
reserved spots in all types of weather.
Please recommend that the architects address this issue of public safety and
modify the plans to keep the handicapped parking free from the snow storage area.
The Commission will follow up with the Building Inspector to ensure this is
addressed prior to occupancy permit issuance.
Sincerely,
Victoria Buckley
Chair, Commission on Disability
1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE • LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420
