Commission on Disability, Minutes June 5, 2014
In Attendance: Victoria Buckley, Chair, Fred Lonardo, Building Commissioner, Francine Stieglitz,
Len Morse - Fortier, Harry MacKay, Nate Finch, and Sue Cusack
Introduction of new Building Commissioner Fred Lonardo
• WELCOME!!! We are excited to have you join us!
Discussion about variance requested by Hayden Recreational Center — second floor men's room
• We suspect the request for variance has already been forwarded to the AAB.
• We would like to send a letter and suggest reducing the number of stalls from 3 to 2 and a
single urinal.
• A motion was approved by all members present to send a letter to Hayden with an
alternative strategy to addressing access in this restroom.
Discussion about Bridge PTA's Legacy Brick Fundraiser
• Sue will follow up with Pat Goddard to get his input
• Len will follow -up with Bridge School representatives and discuss the potential alternative
design strategies for commemorative bricks.
Review of draft of letter for Selectmen
• We reviewed and edited a letter that will be forwarded to the Selectmen encouraging
greater integration of access and inclusion in strategic planning and goal setting. We also
requested that they assist us in eliminating the use of brick as the primary material for all
town - controlled sidewalks.
Letter to Department of Public Safety for Berman's Liquor
• The owner has requested a letter of support to the Department of Public Safety
acknowledging that the handicapped parking issue has been addressed and corrected.
394 Lowell Street — Variance Discussion
• This is a complex of 19 office condos that is requesting support for a AAB variance for
restrooms in a second floor condo.
• Based on the documents that we received, and some concerns raised, Victoria will send
them a request to meet with us at our next meeting in July.
DCU Bank
• In their efforts to accommodate access from the rear of the building, they have run into a
logistics challenge with a lift and the existing stair structure. This issue may be more a fire
code issue than and accessibility concern. Fred will keep us informed of this project.
Selectmen Assignment
