Town of Lexington
Lexington Tree Committee Minutes
January 9, 2014
A meeting of the Lexington Tree Committee was held on January 9, 2014, 7:30-9:30 a.m.
at the Samuel Hadley Public Services Building, Room 125. A quorum of seven was
present.
Members Present: Chris Filadoro, (Public Grounds Superintendent, Tree Warden), John
Frey (chair), Karen Longeteig, Jewel Kuljian, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, Nell Walker,
Jim Wood
Members Absent: Deborah Mauger (Selectman Liaison),
The meeting acted on the following items:
1.
Anne Senning was appointed asscribe, and the minutes of the meeting of December
12, 2013, were approved.
2. Tree Warden items: Bylaw tree removal applications and activity
Chris Filadoro
will provide more information at a later date. He reported on the application at 181 Follen
Rd.
3. Plan for finishing the Town Tree Inventory:
The committeediscussed the history of
inventory, its rationale, current status, and plans for completion. Plan: Chris Filadoro will
identify the costs of contracting out the remainder of inventory (Precincts 7, 8 & 9) to a
company vs. hiring interns to complete it. Karen Longeteig will write up an ad to hire
interns. Anne Senning will give Karen Longeteig a copy of the ad that was used to hire
interns in the past.
4. Spring 2014 Planting: Placing an Article in the Town Papers Offering Trees vs.
DPW Decides Where to Plant Trees
There was discussion but no vote. It was decided
to do both, one model for setback trees, the other for street, park, cemetery and
conservation land trees.
5. Tree species to order:
Jim Wood raised the issue of which species to order for spring
2014. Chris Filadoro wants to plant 65 trees each in spring and fall to distribute the
forestry staff work loads. The limited available species for fall planting was discussed.
The need to inventory the tree nursery before an order for 2014 spring is placed was
raised. John Frey, Nell Walker and Anne Senning will take this inventory and report to
Jim Wood. Several homeowners have requested species for spring 2014 from a waiting
list of setback trees begun in fall 2013. Jim Wood will look for these species.
