Veterans Affairs Officer Ryan Lennon and
US Senatorial candidate Gabriel Gomez were added to the list.
• Essay Contest: Barbara Manfredi suggests we model our efforts after the approach taken by the
300 Committee, but on a lesser scale. This involves working directly with teachers to gain their
commitment to building student awareness of veterans and the importance of observing Veterans
Day. In classes, teachers would discuss topics such as "Who is a veteran ?" and "Why do we
honor veterans ?" Barbara's contacts include Matt Mehler, who oversees the Social Studies
departments at Diamond and Clarke middle schools, and the Assistant Superintendent of
Schools. She recommends making contacts over the summer, focusing efforts on 8 11, and 11 11,
grades where U.S. History is taught. The Veterans Day segment could be covered during
September and early October so that students would be genuinely interested and invested in the
project when invited to submit an essay. It should not be mandated.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Dixon, Co- Secretary
