MQg
1775 NQ
k D
APRIL N
/NGT
APPROVED MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Date, Time and Location of Meeting, October 10, 2013, 7 pm, Town Office Building
Members Present: Peggy Enders (Chair), Bob Hausslein (FoLB Chair), Bob Dangel, George Gagliardi,
Marita Hartshorn, Stew Kennedy, Mike Tabaczynski
Members Absent: Patria Lanfranchi, John Frey.
Others Present: Rami Haddad
The September Meeting Minutes were accepted as presented
Toole Design Group Report: What's Next? After discussing the Toole Design Group presentation the
committee agreed that implementing their recommendations could be approached from multiple
directions. There was discussion about forming a regional Minuteman Bikeway Committee with
representatives from the Bikeway towns and regional planners as is being done with the Battle Road
Scenic Byway; Michelle Ciccolo's advice might be helpful. The committee might also identify items in the
report that pertain only to Lexington and pursue them through John Livsey. For instance, gathering
places, pedestrian crossing lights, and improved sightlines should be giving a high priority. Wayfinding
signs would be less expensive if purchased in bulk and would be more of a regional item; safety signs
would be more local. The committee discussed the recommendations regarding widening the trail but
came to no conclusion. The next step will be to review the plan in detail at an extended meeting, ideally
in the company of John Livsey.
Minuteman Bikeway Walk: Bob Dangel, Bob Hausslein, and Peggy walked the Bikeway with John
Livsey from Mal's to Hancock Street to review in person the recommendations forwarded to him regarding
Bikeway conditions and plans for root work and paving next year. In many places the roots need to be
dug out and deep barriers placed around them to prevent further intrusion. Drainage and runoff problems
need to be addressed as well. Sections of the Bikeway will need to be closed during the work, and
detours (particularly between Bedford Street and Hartwell Avenue) need to be well considered.
Bike - Related Public Arts Projects: The committee discussed both the possibility of a mural under the
Maple Street Bridge and artfully designed bike racks. Either or both projects would qualify for a grant
from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Marita described the process. The deadline is October 15 of
each year. The first step is to put out a call for public artists, define the size, theme, and time frame.
Awards might include sums of money to finalists.
Other business: The Planning Department has proposed a revised parking configuration in the area
behind Cary Hall and the police department. John Livsey has suggested that a new ramp off the Bikeway
into the parking lot be included as part of the design. The committee unanimously supports construction
of the ramp in the area identified (i.e., close to the back of Cary Hall).
Joe Pato has agreed to serve as the LBAC Selectman liaison; Peggy has asked Peter Kelley to continue
on as our plowing liaison and in particular with Jimmy McLaughlin.
