,S US Mop
pQ` 1 775 ` (3
APRIL 11-
k /NG'V
APPROVED MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Date, Time and Location of Meeting: August 15, 2013, 7 pm, Town Office
Building
Members Present: Peggy Enders (Chair), Bob Hausslein (FoLB Chair), Bob
Dangel, John Frey, George Gagliardi, Mike Tabaczynski, Sandra Shaw
(Recreation Committee Liaison).
Members Absent: Marita Hartshorn, Stew Kennedy, Patria Lanfranchi
Others Present: Sgt. Paul Callahan (Lexington Police), Carolyn Levi, Richard
Canale
Minutes: The July 2013 minutes were accepted as submitted.
Annual Report: The annual report to the Town is due at the end of August.
Old Mass Ave (update): Richard Canale provided a handout describing the
benefits of removing the roadway centerline on streets with low traffic volumes;
Old Mass Ave receives fewer than 3,000 vehicles per day. Peggy reported that
John Livsey is committed to a centerline on Old Mass Ave, particularly because of
nighttime travel concerns [i.e., limited sightline at crest of hill]. A suggestion was
made for an "intermittent" centerline. Peggy relayed to John Livsey the
committee's preference for "sharrows" plus a wide shoulder and, if possible, to
continue pattern from Mass Ave to Wood Street to Old Mass Ave. Concerns were
expressed about the crossing pads that have been installed at intersections, both
in terms of width and edge drop -off.
Letter to Selectmen re Town Center Traffic and Parking: The committee
agreed that Peggy should write to the Selectmen to reaffirm our recommendation
that the final decision about traffic and parking lanes in the town center make it
possible for bicycles to navigate without the risk of getting "doored ". As it is, Mass
Ave in the center is not a "complete street."
Healthy Communities and Bike Safety Program: The status of this program is
unclear, but there has been the suggestion that a bike safety program be piloted
during the Healthy Communities program year.
Toole Design Group Report (update): Nothing to report yet.
