MINUTES
Greenways Corridor Committee
August 19, 2013, 4:30 -6 pm
Legion Room, Cary Hall
Members Present Rick Abrams, Alex Dohan, Peggy Enders, Eileen Entin, Bob Hausslein, Paul
Knight, Aaron Ladd, Mike Tabaczinski
Other Attendees Stew Kennedy (Conservation Commission liaison), Karen Mullins (Town
Conservation Administrator)
1. Votes:
• June 11, 2013, meeting Minutes — approved
2. Current Business Review:
• ACROSS Lexington Project — Rick has met with several Town entities regarding
necessary permissions for the proposed Route B, and has appointments with
several others, including the principals of Clarke and Bridge schools. Everyone
seems enthusiastic.
• We looked at new trail marker samples, of stronger metal that won't bend so
easily. The new markers are also larger, to allow for route notations (A, B, etc.).
Rick is also getting a quote from a different sign manufacturer, to compare.
• Decisions were made as to the final location of Route B. The trail will run along
the beach side of the Old Res. It will pass through the forest between Dunback
Meadow and Clarke Middle School. It will run along the pond at Cotton Farm.
From Slocum, the route will turn onto Hunt and cross Mass. Ave. at the end of
Hunt, following Mass. Ave. and crossing to Fletcher. Though intended for both
walkers and cyclists, the route will be marked primarily for pedestrians. Will there
be a crosswalk on Marrett Rd. between Cotton Farm and Dunback Meadow?
• Could we get Saucony to sponsor an inaugural Big Walk for the new route?
Current Business Updates:
• West Lexington Greenway trail — Karen noted that not much can happen in the
Wood Street area until the Conestoga Road litigation is settled. That could happen
in October. A planned scout -led project on the Bates Road access trail has been
shelved due to the litigation.
• The Board of Selectmen is creating a policy that will include points for the GCC
and other Town entities to consider when working with landowners on projects
such as the WLG.
• Rick is involved with the Healthy Communities grant that the Town is applying
for.
4. New Business:
• For Bike/Walk Week in the spring of 2014, we might consider group trip to Busa
Farm, in conjunction with LexFarm. This led to thoughts about a future ACROSS
route that might incorporate the Farm, Whipple Hill, Lexington Christian
Academy and Harrington School.
