LDAC
EXINGTONESIGNDVISORYOMMITTEE
Meeting Minutes:
January 11, 2007
Present:
Colin Smith (Chair), John Frey, Alenka Slezak, Timothy Lee, Betsy Whitman, Bahig Kaldas, Bruce Creager
Scribe:
Colin Smith
Call to Order:
The Meeting was called to Order at 7:30PM.
Approvals:
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved with minor corrections.
Presentations/Review:
31 Massachusetts Ave- Car Wash
The DAC was presented with revisions to the proposed car wash design at 31 Massachusetts Ave. The redesign has
taken into account previous DAC concerns with respect to the overall intensity of use of this site. The number of
proposed wash bays has been reduced by 3 bays and positioned to allow for the required 10’ transition space along the
front lot line. The existing vacuum bays are proposed to be reused in the new layout. One area of concern is the
extremely wide curb cut (3+ lanes). While we understand the functional aspects of the proposed design, it’s important
to maintain a definition between the site and public way (the sidewalk). Every effort should be made to minimize curb
cuts and increase the landscape transition space. It was suggested that if additional landscape space was not possible
with traffic circulation at least a pavement change be made to reinforce the definition of the sidewalk and articulate the
drive aisles. In addition, it was suggested that the landscape space on the western lot line be increased to reduce the
curb cut and allow for a new street tree.
Lexington DPW
Revised floor plans of the Department of Public Works building were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to
the design of the administration wing and the main entrance. There remain concerns about overall scale and
arrangement of programmatic elements in the space (i.e. location of the bathrooms near front entry within public
view, etc…). Sketches and photographs of models were reviewed for the building façade facing Bedford Street.
The design is beginning to reflect the “civic” nature of this building while utilizing materials consistent with the
rest of the building. We look forward to reviewing the plans and elevations as they develop.
Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:30PM.
Next Meeting:
Scheduled for Tuesday February 6 @ 7:30PM.
Cc: Board of Selectmen
Wendy Manz, Planning Board Liaison
