LDAC
EXINGTONESIGNDVISORYOMMITTEE
Meeting Minutes:
June 6, 2006
Present:
Colin Smith (Chair), Bruce Creager, John Frey, Timothy Lee, Bahig Kaldas, Alenka Slezak, Wendy Manz
Scribe:
Colin Smith
Call to Order:
The Meeting was called to Order at 7:30PM.
Approvals:
None
Presentations/Review:
Captain Parker Arms- Freestanding Sign.
Mr. Steven Garrity of Garrity Signs and Ms. Pamela Diotaleviof Captain Parker Arms presented the new
sign design, approximately 7’-6” wide by 5’-7” high.
The location of the proposed sign, at the corner of Waltham Street and Worthen Road is proposed to be
situated within the existing evergreen tree line and does not appear to create a visibility problem for
pedestrians or vehicles (site line triangle requirements as stipulated in the Zoning By-Laws).
The Design Advisory Committee recommends this project be approved with a maximum height of 5’-6”
(although the DAC prefers the sign as originally presented at 5’-0” high). The Owner shall submit light
fixture cuts for review and approval. In addition, there is a portion of asphalt sidewalk in front of the
proposed sign at the corner which does not appear to do much other than encourage pedestrians to cross
Waltham Street at a dangerous location (low visibility and no crosswalk). Although the Town owns the
sidewalk it was discussed having Captain Parker Arms remove this portion of sidewalk to clean up the area
which would make their sign more presentable. We strongly encourage the Owner discuss this idea with
DPW.
Other Business:
Discussed the DAC recommendation letter concerning Town Center sidewalk design/standards. The
discussion focused on the Disability Commission’s recommendation letter. In light of the Disability
Commision’s report, the DAC remains strong in its recommendation of brick pavers on a rigid base for
sidewalks in the Town Center. The DAC will continue with outreach and perform additional research
regarding cost comparisons between brick and concrete sidewalks. In addition, the DAC will contact the
Architectural Access Board to find out if new regulations are being considered to minimize vibration levels
to persons utilizing wheelchairs.
Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30PM.
Next Meeting:
Scheduled for Tuesday May 2, 2006 @ 7:30PM.
Cc: Board of Selectmen
Wendy Manz, Planning Board Liaison
