Town of Lexington
Special Tree Committee Meeting
Tuesday, March 5, 2013
Chris would like to cut back on the number of trees planted out from the Tree Nursery
and to reserve the Nursery for specimen trees "to manage the situation better ". He
suggested that we determine how many trees can be planted out from the Nursery
this year. He would like to plant more bare root trees. Regarding the goal of planting
130 trees he would like to plant out sixty five trees in the spring and the remainder in
the fall. He would like to do direct bare root planting in the fall (late
October /November) for street and setback trees. The order is to be placed in June.
A date is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20th at 7:30 a.m. to evaluate the root
system of earmarked trees and make decisions about how to handle the findings.
The goal is to determine the trees that are viable to keep in the nursery. Chris, four
Forestry staff and the Tree Committee will be there on this day.
At the request of Chris, the Tree Committee voted to give the authority about the
number of trees to be planted at each site to the Tree Committee member /s working
with residents regarding street trees and setback trees.
Jim Wood will be working on the Dig Safe plan for smooth operation and
communication with Tree Committee members, the Tree Warden, and for DPW
record keeping for street trees, setback trees, Commemorative Trees and other
planting sites. He will stake the locations, make the appropriate markings, and
contact Dig Safe for all trees to be planted.
A large number of requests are coming in from the article published in the Lexington
Minuteman for two weeks in a row. A similar article with more photos is also to be
published in the Colonial times.
6. Set approximate date (in March ?) for planting Nickles' commemorative tree. Jim
will contact Dig Safe so this tree can be planted as soon as possible.
There was no remote participation. The meeting was not recorded.
Respectfully submitted,
Jewel Kuljian, Scribe
Next regular meeting: March 14, 2013 at 7:30 a.m. at Samuel Hadley Public
Services Building, Room 125.
