<br />Minutes August 11, 2005 Lexington Tree Committee, Lexington, MA <br /> <br /> Present: Karen Longeteig, presiding chairperson, Jim Jones, Jeanne Krieger, Selectman <br />Liaison, Dave Pinsonneault, Superintendent Public Grounds, Anne Senning, scribe, <br />Susan Solomon, Nell Walker. Guest; Gerry Paul <br /> <br />1. Anne Senning was named as scribe. <br />Minutes of July 14, 2005 <br />2. were accepted. <br />Trees in Budget <br />3. . Ask for $25,000 for trees as line item in budget this coming <br />year. Jeanne reported that trees wouldn’t be considered a capital expenditure. 2005-06 <br />will be an override year. The Tree Committee will need to advocate for trees to be in the <br />next budget. <br />Trees in the Planning Process <br />4. discussion. 1. Planting tree strips in parking lots. <br />2. Designing strips for trees along new sidewalks. 3. New DPW building 30% ‘green’ a <br />LEED’s rating of Silver. 4. Outreach to current composting facility. 5. Articles for the <br />Lexington Minuteman: September; History of Trees in Lexington, Gerry Paul, October; <br />Bittersweet, Nell Walker, November; Memorial Tree Program, Karen Longeteig, <br />December; Tree Inventory, Anne Senning, January; Protecting Trees During <br />Construction, r/o John Frey <br />Reports on Tree Activity <br />5. D. Pinsonneault . 368 calls (sites) through permitting <br />process. 400 have been approved for removal of which 179 have been removed. 905 are <br />required to be replanted. 401 have been replanted. <br />Tree By Law <br />Dave raised issue that the needs to have a new section, which states <br />that trees that are left on site during construction need to be sufficiently protected from <br />compaction during duration of project. <br />Replacement of Trees, <br />12 or 13 townspeople have requested which have been <br />removed by the Town. Dave plans to use $1,000 Nstar grant to fund these at a cost of <br />$225 a tree. The Town will plant the trees in the fall. <br />Memorial Tree Program <br />Several people called about , but were warded off by <br />the price. Instead they donated $40 or $50 to the Selectman’s Tree Fund. <br />ReLeaf Grant <br />Urban Forestry signed off on after inspecting trees behind CVS <br />parking lot. <br />Bittersweet <br />Upon consultation with the tree warden may be cut on public land. <br />6. Dave Pavlik, Engineering department, taught Committee members how to <br />Right of Way in the Field <br />determine when doing Tree Inventory. <br />Summary: Look for the crown of the road, split it in half. <br /> Crown may have split in a seam, split the road in half. <br /> Stonewalls are usually at the end of the right of way. <br /> Back of the sidewalk is usually the end of the right of way. <br />Look for monuments or control points, at the turns in the road, or in front of <br />property lines. Control points are stones, four by four inches, with circular holes <br />in them, four feet deep. Wear safety vests. <br />Next Regular Meeting is September 8, 2005 Room 111 7:30 AM <br />
