TreeMINUTES1-13-05

Minutes January 13, 2005 Tree Committee, Lexington, MA

Present: John Frey, Chairman; Jim Jones, Scribe; Jeanne Krieger, Selectman Liaison;
David Pinsonneault, Superintendant of Public Grounds; Susan Solomon; Anne Senning;
Nell Walker

1. The revised minutes of the 11/18/04 meeting were approved. The minutes of the
12/9/04 meeting were approved with minor changes to be reviewed at next meeting.

2. The Laconia Street Permit for the removal of 17 trees was discussed. Most of the trees
will have to be removed because of work to be done subsequent to designation of
Laconia as an approved street.

3. The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission had requested permission to use graphics
from the Lexington Tree Manual. The request was approved with the proviso that
Lexington and the graphic designer, Bruce Walker, be acknowledged. D. Pinsonneault
will respond.

4. Three articles that are being presented to Town Meeting were discussed: Tree
Revolving Fund, Amend Tree Bylaw, and Tree Planting and Maintenance. The wording
of each was approved with the exception of replacing the last two sentences in the last
article with 'Since 2000, 620 trees have been removed and only 200 planted'.

5. The alternative Tree Fund proposal previously brought up by Jim Wood was not
discussed because he was not present. However, the Committee felt that in any case it
would be harder to access funds under that proposal.

6. Any changes to the Memorial Tree Fund brochure should be put off until after Town
Meeting.

7. The status of the Tree Inventory is that the inventory form is being adapted to provide
information on attributes 16 to 26 that will alert the Tree Warden to potential problems
with specific trees so that he can inspect the trees and, if necessary, issue a work order.

8. The role of the Committee in providing information about Sudden Oak Death was
brought up. It was felt that sufficient information had already been disseminated by other
organizations.

9. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 a.m.
