July 8, 2004
Lexington Tree Committee Minutes

Town Office Building, Rm 111, 7:30 a.m.

Present: John Frey, Chair; Jim Jones, Jean Krieger, selectman liaison; Karen Longeteig, Dave Pinsonneault, DPW
staff; Anne Senning, Susan Solomon, Nell Walker, Secretary pro tem. Absent: Jim Wood

1. Nell Walker in alphabetical rotation, was designated secretary for this session.

2. Minutes for the June 10, 2004 meeting were read and corrected. The corrected minutes will be accepted at the
next meeting, a more efficient procedure.

3. Forestry Division Report (Pinsonneault): From 10/1/01: 190 calls, 254 trees marked for replacement, 555 to be
replanted.131 closed out (either no trees affected or no replanting required). From Jan. 2004: 28 planted (including
11 funded by the Kirk Trust) on Worthen Road 65 removed, 49 pruned and 3 treated.

3b. Discussion re watering schedule of new trees by the DPW: Library and Worthen Rd. ongoing. New trees on
school land should be done, requiring a request from the school staff to Forestry Division.

3c. Pinsonneault suggested an article in the Minuteman regarding the Tree By-law and when it is applied to a tree
removal on private property. It could take a form similar to other periodic information releases such as articles on
trash and recycling.

4. Status of Tree Inventory
Anne Senning reported: (a) the software from Community Forest Project (CFP) will cost $50/unit. Without this
partnership this ESRI-based software costs $500/unit. David P. suggested we (in advance of grant) go ahead and
purchase an IPAC unit for training and testing purposes and to get a look at the manual. The Town will supply 4
base layers for the tree overlay (streets, sidewalks, buildings and parcels). Connie Rawson, the Town’s MIS
director said these layers were 80% complete, according to the Engineering Office. Sidewalks are incomplete, but
it seems that the Bikeway Committee did a study of sidewalks recently. Jerry Van Hook should have information.
Anne will ask for an ‘in good faith’ copy of the proprietary software from CFP.
(b) Anne handed out copies of the MOU with Community Forest Partnership. It was decided that it did not need a
lawyer’s eye until we get the grant and sign the contract with CFP.
(c) Karen Longeteig proposed a Sept. 18 date for reserving the H.S. auditorium for the first training session of
inventory volunteers.

5. Memorial Tree Application Form
Karen distributed more copies of the draft form. It was decided not to mention in the brochure just how a memorial
tree would be marked on site.
Anne’s estimate from Sir Speedy was $799 for l000 forms. There should be another estimate for 300 copies.

We should start an inventory of public places suitable for tree memorial plantings.

Meeting adjourned at 9:20 a.m.

Next meeting August 12, 2004

Nell Walker, Scribe
