<br />TREE COMMITTEE <br /> <br />Minutes, February 14, 2002 <br /> <br /> <br />Attendance: Frey, Mazerall, Solomon, Walker, Wood <br /> Town officials: Abbott, Dave P <br />1) Approve minutes of January meeting as amended <br />2) Warrant Article #20, Tree Inventory, $20,000 <br /> a) after much discussion, it was unanimously voted that all moneys should be <br /> in Article #4, DPW operating budget, rather than in a stand-alone article; <br /> under DPW, Forest Division, contractual services also voted to postpone Article #12 <br /> b) reminder that the report on the activities of the Tree Committee should be given under <br /> Article #2 at any time during Town Meeting <br />3) Massachusetts ReLeaf grant application <br /> a) $5000 matching grant; proposal due March 15; Wood and Frey will write the grant <br /> proposal with help from the DPW <br />b) write letters of support to state legislators <br />4) Tree removal applications for January <br /> a) 26 applications; 60 trees approved for removal; compensatory planting of 100 trees <br /> b) most builders are cooperating, but there are still many misconceptions; it needs to be <br />understood that trees on a property can still be removed if there is no construction; <br /> this needs to be publicized <br /> c) consider raising application fee with the proceeds going to the tree fund, <br /> not into general funds <br />5) Tree manual <br /> a) there should be only one manual, with a section for construction <br /> b) the manual should make readers aware of procedures and should not be too technical <br /> c) the manual should set up guidelines <br /> d) the manual should stress the importance of planting methods <br /> not too deep stakes <br /> feeder root protection, etc. <br /> e) Appoint a subcommittee to rework early draft.
