Proposal to name the Lexington Town Pool Complex in honor of Irving H. Mabee

The Recreation Committee discussed the request, forwarded to them by the Board of
Selectmen, to rename the Town Pool Complex in honor of Irving H. Mabee. Mr. Mabee was
instrumental in securing the approval of Town Meeting in 1978 and 1979 for funds to
renovate and expand the Town Pool Complex. He was a member of the Planning Board, the
Board of Selectmen and the Permanent Building Committee. In the words of Robert B. Kent,
who submitted the renaming request to the Board of Selectmen in June: “His last
contribution, I believe, was his greatest. He joined the Permanent Building
Committee…principally because of his interest in the swimming pool project: the diving
pool, the new main pool, the children’s wading pool, the bath house, and the deck area.”

Hank Manz told the Recreation Committee that the Board of Selectmen would support a
positive recommendation from the Recreation Committee. The Committee briefly discussed
the standards by which a facility could be renamed. Bob Boudreau asked if a final decision
had been reached regarding the request to rename Rindge Park. It was noted that the
recommendation of the Recreation Committee was to rename the park “Veterans’ Park”
rather than after one individual, as was originally suggested. Rick DeAngelis and Sandra
Shaw noted that since Mr. Mabee was so instrumental to the success of the Town Pool
Complex project it would be appropriate to go forward with a renaming of the complex.

Rick DeAngelis moved that the Lexington Recreation Committee recommend to the Board of
Selectmen that the Town Pool Complex be renamed in honor of Irving H. Mabee for the
reasons stated in the letter of June 17, 2008 from Robert B. Kent.
1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE • LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420
