Sidewalk Committee <br />Members: 9 <br />Appointed By: Board of Selectmen <br />Length of Term: 3 years (rotating) <br />Appointments Made: September 30 <br />Meeting Times: As Needed <br />Description: This Committee will advise the Board of Selectmen on sidewalk policies. In <br />developing recommendations they will seek broad citizen input to support and encourage <br />implementation of the recommendations of the Transportation Element of the Comprehensive <br />Plan for increasing pedestrian activity and reducing traffic by considering the adequacy of the <br />town wide sidewalk network to safely address the Town's recreation and commuter needs; <br />And if warranted: <br />• Work with the school PTAs and School Department to implement and sustain a Safe <br />Routes to School program at all schools within the town <br />• Recommend a Master Plan for sidewalk construction and maintenance, including a <br />prioritization strategy <br />• Recommend design concepts such as tree requirements, green borders between the edge <br />of pavement and sidewalk, roads that necessitate sidewalks, crosswalk signage and <br />placement. <br />• Recommend a policy and bylaws/ordinances for sidewalk maintenance by private <br />property owners, particularly snow removal, Town of Lexington right of way clearances and <br />removal of tree and brush obstructions upon sidewalks and unpaved public pathways <br />• Recommend a method of financing the development of the proposed Master Plan <br />Criteria for Membership: Nomination by school PTA organizations, Enthusiasm for good <br />health, safety and sound planning. <br />Ref.: Adopted by the Board of Selectmen at its meeting on November 29, 2004. <br />Board of Selectmen voted to designate as Special Municipal Employees on 1/18/06. <br />Selectmen voted to change membership from 9-13 to 9 members on October 17, 2011. <br />Suggested Membership: <br />Liaisons Selectmen, School Committee, School Department, Board of Health, DPW, <br />Traffic Coordinator, Town Engineer) <br />Disability Commission <br />PTAs one from each school, preferably one who is the Safe Routes to School Coordinator <br />Neighborhood Organizations <br />Bicycle Enthusiasts <br />League of Woman Voters <br />Residents <br />
