Minutes of Meeting of July 14, 2010
A meeting of the Design Advisory Committee was held on July 14, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the Ellen Stone
room at Cary Hall. A quorum of eight was present.
Members Present: Tim Lee (Chair), Bruce Creager, Steve Vincent, John Frey, Richard Brown, Richard
Friedson, Colin Smith, Alenka Slezak
Members Absent: Brigitte Staines, Ginna Johnson, Bahig Kaldas, Betsy Whitman
Approvals: Minutes of the previous meeting were approved with minor corrections
The meeting acted on the following items:
Proposed access ramp for Town Office building — Lexington Public Facilities
The DAC reviewed the proposed access ramp and had the following comments
1. The DAC is concerned with the metal grating proposed for a portion of the ramp and generally
preferred a solid ramp solution. Concerns are if it will be non-slip, snow and ice removal
difficulties, and structural integrity over time
2. The DAC would like to see the designers push the design of the railing and lighting, less utilitarian
and generic while still meeting code requirements
3. The DAC suggested making the railing feel lighter by reducing the size of the components
4. The DAC commented that the lighting be selected and located to provide optimum visibility for
ramp users
5. The DAC was not clear on the storm water would be handled under the ramp and asked for more
information
The Design Advisory Committee recommended the applicant return for further review and could not
recommend approval of this project as currently presented.
Sidewalk lighting improvements at Cary Hall & Town Office Building — Lexington Public Facilities
The DAC reviewed the proposed lighting option presented and had generally accepted and approved the
fixture in a more simplified form
51 Worthen Road, Douglass Funeral Home — Sign Permit Application
The DAC reviewed the proposed sign application and approved the application with subject to the
following comments.
1. The DAC suggested reducing the size of the 'Funeral Home' letters for better clarity and hierarchy
450 Bedford Street — Sign Application
The DAC reviewed the application presented and did not accept the changes suggested by the applicant and
agreed that the previous recommendation made by the DAC remain as previously submitted to the ZBA

Signboard Size: 5' 6" 38"ht. ( 17.4 Sq. Ft. )
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
• Material: Mahogany boards 2" thick.
• Construction: 7 or 8 boards (+/-5"wide) are laminated 'butcher
block style reversing the grain. The boards are laminated
with the 100 waterproof West System epoxy /resin.
Approx. 60% of the signboard is coated with same,
This protects endgrain areas, lettering, borders, scrolls and the Logo.
• Additional Construction: Four 1/2" steel rods are placed vertically inside signboard to prevent bowing.
• Lettering is hand carved as shown in a Vgroove style. The Border around perimeteris a 1/2" V-groove
style carved by hand.
• The Logo is accurately represented. It is carved in "relief" as described in the "detail" sheet.
• The symmetrical Scrolls are hand carved in a pleasing relief, and gilded 23 karat Gold foil.
Note: 23Karat is 94-94% pure gold +plus 4-5% copper/silver alloy and is verivally non ccrrosive.
• The signboard receives 3 coats of primer +plus 3 coats of oil base low -med. lustre White background paint.
• The lettering receives 2 coats of Chromatic Lettering enamel. The V.-groove Border is gilded in 23 kt Gold.
The signboard is outlined in Black enamel as shown.
• Method of Installation: The signboard is held by two 4"x 6" Cedar or pressure Treated Posts.
The posts receive 3 coats of white primer +plus 3 coats of White paint, (same as signboard,)
The posts are pre drilled for (5) six inch lag screws each side. Dowel plugs 1" diameter hide lag screws.
• Custom Post Top: I laminate a custom moulded mahogany pediment with a Gold Ball Finial
as shown. I turn (lathe) the Ball out of 20 lb density HDU. Both the moulded pediment
base & Ball are coated with West System and laminated to the Cedar Post.

• 1 turn 20 Ib.Urethane ball on base finial.
This is laminated directly onto the
molded Mahogany pediment post top.
• Both are coated with 100% waterproof
West System epoxy resin.
