THE LEAF-DING REPUBLICAN NEWSPAPER OF NEW ENGLAND.
'T'60'15ton ' ' Ournat+
ESTABLISHED 1833.
ISSUED DAILY, SUNDAY AND WEEKLY.
P. O. Box 2115.
BOSTON, MASS., April 1 , 1896 .
Dear Sir : -
A proposition now pending before the Legislature and pressed
strenuously by men of influence seeks to exempt from the taxation to
which they are now subject , personal property , the business of manufac-
turing corporations and partnerships , and to leave the corporation tax
merely upon the quasi public corporations .
It is proposed to use the part of the corporation tax which
will continue to be collected for the payment of the state and count '
y
tax.
The deficiency in revenue , caused by the above exemption of
personal property, is to be met by an increased tax upon real estate , and
also in part by a proposed tax upon successions and inheritances .
The Boston Journal desires to learn the opinions on this sub--
ject of the leading men best qualified to judge of the effect of such
proposed changes in our law.
The Journal therefore asks you to reply concisely to the ques-
tions on the accompanying circular, giving your opinion individually if
you do not feel justified in giving it officially, and, if possible , the
sentiment of the people in your municipality , as to the advisability of
the passage of such a law.
. Respectfully yours ,
Journal Newspaper. Company .
Editor and Publisher .
