HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-11-COD-min Commission on Disability Meeting Minutes—October 11, 2018 Members Present: Victoria Buckley (Chair), Sue Cusack, Michael Martignetti,Julie Miller, Leonard Morse-Fortier, Janet Perry, Francine Stieglitz Town Liaisons: Jim Kelly, Building Commissioner; Bonnie Teitelman, Council on Aging Guest: Colin Smith, Colin Smith Architect; Melissa Battite, Dir of Recreation and Community Programs; Superintendent Julie Hackett Minutes August and September minutes were reviewed and approved. Reservoir Bathhouse Colin Smith came to discuss the Reservoir Bathhouse. We were excited to see the planned updates that include an accessible bathhouse at the Lexington Res. We suggested an expansion of the availability of handicapped parking. Next steps include sending details out to bid for costs. FY 20 would have the costs for construction. LPS— Diversity, Equity& Inclusion Superintendent Julie Hackett came to discuss the suspension disparities and action plan going forward. She shared some of the steps that she took in anticipation of interviewing for the position of Superintendent and some of the action steps that she took once she was formally in that role. These action steps included meeting with the Administrative Council upon her arrival to begin the planning process to address these community concerns. This team pulled together a detailed report about the challenges that we face relative to disproportional suspension rates, particularly for students with disabilities and black students. The Racial Equity Group was also contacted to provide a training in Restorative Justice. Superintendent Hackett welcomed the opportunity to work with us and other community members.
