SPECIAL BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
AUGUST 11, 1983
The Lexington Board of Health held a special meeting on Thursday, August 11,
1983 at 2:00 p.m. in Room G-15 of the Town Office Building. Members present
were: Mr. James W. Lambie, Chairman; Dr. Linda Roemer, Ph.D., Health Director,
George A. Smith and Mr. David Henley, Superintendent of E.M.M.C.P.
Mr. Smith reported that since the last meeting conditions had changed in
Southeastern, Mass. Both Highland "J" virus and EEE virus are more prevelent in
this area and there was both a suspected human and horse case from Norton and
North Datmouth under investigation.
There has been no virus Highland "J" or EEE isolated from Middlesex County to
date.
A review of the projected weather forecast was made. This was of concern due
to the fact that 11" to 2" of rain is projected through the weekend.
David Henley reviewed a planned strategy in the event of rain.It could be
projected that if it rains, adult mosquitoes could become a problem on or about
August 20th. To counter this intensified larviciding would be conducted through
the 20th. This might be followed by truck mounted ULV spraying either area or
Town -wide. It might lead to aerial spraying if conditions deteriorated.
David gave a status report on the testing of the Malathion for impriorities. The
standars have been reviewed by the Lab. and testing should be complete by the
middle of next wee, August 17, 1983.
It was decided to update the "Hot Line" message. Mr. Smith was directed to do so.
Also, because of the viral activity in Southeastern, Mass. a warning about EEE
mosquito bites, etc. should be placed in the paper. The cable TV message should
stress personal protection.
Considering the situation in southeastern Mass. it was decided we should closely
monitor the situation, daily if need be. The preparation to spray should be
heightened.
David was asked what guidelines would be beneficial in making this decision. He
stated that the health threat or a public health emergency would be based on EEE
viral activity and a large mosquito population. Under these conditions, spraying
might be imminent.
After further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
It was agreed before adjournment that we would continue to closely monitor the
situation - particularly the suspected human case.
Lastly, it was noted that M.D.P.H. had indicated that an advisory update was
ready for distribution and should be in the mail:
1
1
1
