BOARD OF HEALTH MRH'TING
September 5, 1952
A regular meeting of the Board of Health was held
in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, on Fri-
day, September 5, 1952, at 3:00 P. M. Chairman McQuil-
lan, Mr. Jackson, the Health Sanitarian, and the Agent
were present.
Letter was reQeived from Sunnyfield Associates
(W. P. Johnston, Secretary, 10 Calvin Street) stat-
ing that during the war much of the land in the
Sunnyfield area was used for victory gardens and
permits were granted for the construction of tool
houses. Many of the owners of these tool houses,
presumably without obtaining permits, erected out-
houses on their land. The Associates requested the
Board of Health to instruct the owners of the out-
houses to eliminate them if they do not comply to the
laws of the Town.
Mr. Jackson was instructed to advise the group
that the Board of Health has no jurisdiction insofar
as the removal of the tool houses is concerned.
Further consideration was given to letter dated
June 24, 1952, received from Mr. George P. Morey,
President of the Community Services of Lexington, in
regard to the Board of Health becoming affiliated with
this organization.
In view of an opinion received by the Board of
Selectmen from Mr. Stevens, Town Counsel, the Board
of Health is not to become affiliated with the Com-
munity Services of Lexington but will assist at any
time without actually becoming a member of the group.
Letter was received from the Department of•Pub-
lic Health, Diagnostic Laboratory, advising that a
certificate of approval has been issued for the Lex-
ington Board of Health laboratory.
Letter was received from the State Department
of Public Healthin regard to the suitability of the
soil for sewage disposal by local means at the so-
called Minute Man Highland subdivision.
The Chairman discussed the communication with
Dr. Cosgrove by telephone and in view of the report,
the Board of Health is in favor of approving the
twenty house lots, included in Section I with a

definite understanding that each lot will have to be
inspected and approved by the Health Sanitarian. In
regard to Section II, the Board felt that it is not
in a position to approve the fifty lots in this sec-
tion as a whole.
Mr. Jackson was instructed to engage Whitman &
Howard, subject to the approval of Dr. Cosgrove, to
test the land as its suitability for sewage disposal.
The following applications for permits to keep
animals were approved, the applicants having kept
animals for a period of years without a permit:

27 cows
125 poultry
210 Marrett Road 105 cows
4 calves
Application was received from Bradlee F. Clarke
for a permit to keep two horses at 1377 Massachusetts
Avenue. The application was denied inasmuch as it has
been the policy of the Board not to grant permits to
keep animals in strictly residential areas.
The meeting adjourned at 3;45 P. M.
