BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
February 18, 1949
A regular meeting of the Board of Health
was held in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Build-
ing, on Friday, February 18, 1949. Chairman McQuillan,
Mr. Russell and Mr. Lamont were present. The Clerk
was also present.
Mr. Edward J. Conley, proprietor of -Shoppers'
Haven, met with the Board at the Board's request, to
discuss the sterilization syttem being used in the
store. The Chairman said that -Mr. Lamont had explained
to the Board that Mr. Conely had conferred with Mr.
Lamont and the problem apparently was going to be work-
ed out satisfactorily. Mr. Conley agreed to co-operate
and retired at 3:10 P.M.
The records of the meeting held on January 21,
1949 were deblared approved.
Mr. Lamont submitted a report of the restaurant
inspections he made during the month of February.
The Board discussed the milk analysis and Mr.
Lamont retired.
Letter was received from the Harvard School of
Public Health informing the Board that Forums are held
each month. An invitation was extended for the members
of the Board to attend as guests on Friday, February
25, 1949.
Notice was received relative to the First Annual
Massachusetts Health Conference to be conducted at the
Hotel Statler, February 19 and 20.
Letter was received from the State Department of
Public Health to which was attached the following:
1. Revised list of reportable diseases
2. Pamphlet containing regulations regarding
communicable diseases
3. Sheet showing the isolation and quarantine
requirements reprinted from the above pamphlet.
The Board agreed to amend Chapter 1, Section 2 of the
Regulations of the Board of Health of Lexington to
include the List of Reportable Diseases declared by the
Department of Public Health of Massachusetts to be
dangerous to the Public Health and Reportable under the
authority of Section 6 of Chapter 111 of the General
Laws appearing in the Tercentenary Edition, thereof,
as amended by Chapter 129 of the Acts of 1948.

Letter was received from the State Department Premature
of Public Health calling the attention of Boards of Incubators
Health to the revision of an Act providing for The
Care of Infants Prematurely Born, Chapter 246,
approved May 25, 1939. This Act requires Boards of
Health to provide for the transportation of prematurely
born infants -to hospitals equipped to care for such
infants. Apparently the State requires Boards of
Health to provide incubators.
The Clerk informed the Board that in discussing this
subject with the Woburn Board of Health she was adtlsed
that incubators may be obtained from the Childrents
Hospital at a cost of approximately $ 195.
No deft 1te action is to be taken until a full time
Health Sanatarian has been appointed.
Application was received from Mrs. Violet P. Burgess
for the renewal of her license to maintain a Boarding
Home for Infants.
The Clerk was instructed to write Mrs. Casey, the
Social Worker, and ask if she would investia#e the rumor
that this woman is abusive and harsh to the children in
her care.
The Clerk was instructed to write to the State and
inquire as to whether or not Mrs. Sullivan, 47 Lincoln
Street, has a State License to operate a convalescent
home. This individual informed a representative of the
Board that she has a license but was unable to produce
it.
The Clerk was instructed to obtain a list of
individuals in Lexington Manor who have not as yet
connected with the Manor Sewer System. The Clerk in
the Public Works Department said that she would have
such a list prepared within a week.
The Chairman explained that the Lexington Visiting
Nurse Association will not receive the anticipated
allotment from the Community Fund and therefore would
like the Board of Health to include an item of $2,000
in the 1949 budget to pay for services rendered the Town
by that Agency. The Association contends that work
is being done which would ordinarily be accomplished
by a Town Nurse. It was agreed to write to the Appro-
priation Committee on the subject.
Letter *as received from the Town Clerk informing
the Board that Mr. Carl Terhune has submitted his
resignation as a member of the Board of Health.

No action was taken, but in discussing this with
Mr. Paxton, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen,
the names Leroy Marek and Charles D. Coryell
were suggested as possible members to the Board.
The meeting adjourned.
