Sidewalk Committee
Community Focus Group
Meeting Minutes
May 9, 2005
Present: Sue Ellen Briggs, Olga Guttag, Jeanne Krieger,Victoria Buckley, Lucy Fletcher-
Jones, Gail Wagner, Steve Kropper, Judy Crocker, Tracey Herbert, and Craig Weeks
The Safe Routes to School Survey was the first item discussed. Results are still coming
in and being tabulated. The survey will be discussed in more detail when the tabulating
is finalized.
The discussion moved into surveying the town citizens in general. It was decided that
developing this survey would be put on hold while we concentrate on getting input from
groups and individual citizen at meetings and at Discovery Day.
In planning Discovery Day Jeanne agreed to get us a spot at the DPW's table. Gail
agreed to get a large map of the town with sidewalks noted for display at this table.
Tracey agreed to make a suggestion box. Discovery Day is scheduled for Saturday May
28 from 10-3 in the municipal parking lot that is behind Michelson's with a rain date of
Saturday June 4th. At our next meeting we'll work on a schedule for staffing the table.
In discussing the message we'd like to present to the community and the types of
questions to ask to get their input on the importance of sidewalks we agreed that it would
be much easier to approach this topic with a draft in hand. Steve agreed to produce a
draft of an article for the Lexington Minuteman. This article would be approximately
800 words for their guest commentary or to be used as an article. Steve was given
information from websites and emails between committee members to work from. He
will email the draft to everyone by Friday May 13 so that we can review it before our
next meeting Tuesday May 17 at 9:30AM in room 111.
We agreed to begin approaching groups to set dates to meet with them to discuss
sidewalks and get their input. Below is the list of people and whom they said they would
contact:
Tracey: Stand for Children and Loring Hill Community
Jeanne and Sue Ellen: Brookhaven and South Lexington
Jeanne: Council on Aging
Judy: Hayden Colonial Times and Vision 20/20
Craig: Recreation Dept.
Olga: PTAs and Center Collaborative
Steve: Sustainable Lexington
Victoria: Disability Commission
