Safe Routes To School <br />Subcommittee of Sidewalk Committee <br />September 11, 2015 <br />Members: <br />• one Sidewalk Committee member acts as Town Coordinator <br />Members of each Lexington Public School's PTA/PTO Safe Routes To School <br />Committee <br />Appointed By: <br />• Sidewalk Committee member by the Board of Selectmen <br />• PTA/PTO members by their respective school PTA/PTO organizations <br />Length of Term: three years for the Sidewalk Committee member (rotating) <br />Meeting Times: monthly September - June <br />Description: As a subcommittee of the Sidewalk Committee, to work with school <br />PTA's and School Department to implement and sustain a town -wide Safe Routes To <br />School program. <br />Safe Routes To School is modeled after national and international programs. <br />Focusing on safety, exercise, and fostering a sense of community, the Lexington <br />program strives to increase the number of students who walk, bike, bus, or carpool <br />and decrease the number of cars and idling at our schools. <br />In Massachusetts, Safe Routes To School is parented thru the Massachusetts <br />Department of Transportation. Lexington's program is sponsored by local PTAs, <br />overseen by the Lexington Sidewalk Committee, and works closely with DPW, <br />Engineering, LPS Transportation, Facilities, and the Planning Board. The program <br />communicates annually with the Selectmen, School Committee, Superintendent, and <br />the Police Department. <br />
