INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Town Property Address
LEXINGTON 188 WALTHAM ST.
MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Area(s) Form No.
MASSACHUSETTS ARCHIVES BUILDING
220 MORRISSEY BOULEVARD 456
BOSTON,MASSACHUSETTS 02125
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
It appears that the original owner of this house(first known as 52 Waltham St.)was John T. Scott(1859-1902)who
owned a livery stable on Massachusetts Avenue. On October 25, 1895 the Lexington Minute-man announced that John T.
Scott was going to build on Waltham Street. The 1900 U.S. Census lists Scott as living on Waltham Street between the
Goold(now 182 Waltham)and Wiswell(now 194 Waltham)properties. Scott occupied the house with his wife Blanche
and son Robert. He died on June 9, 1902 and soon thereafter the family appears to have moved.
By 1918 the house was occupied by Lester and Mary Ellis. He was employed as a civil engineer. The family was still
living here in 1942.
[Note: There is no archival evidence to suggest Camille Fairchild lived here. The 1908 directory lists her at 51 Waltham
Street].
BIBLIOGRAPHY:
Lexington Directories,various dates.
Lexington Minute-Man, October 25, 1895.
Supplement prepared by:
Lisa Mausolf
April 2009
