BUILDING FORM (11 Robbins Road) <br /> ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br /> Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the <br /> community. <br /> Constructed in 1931,the Gleason House(MHC#1114)is a 1 1/2-story dwelling displaying an L-shaped plan and capped by <br /> a steeply-pitched, asphalt-shingled gable roof The house is set on a fieldstone foundation and most of the exterior is sheathed <br /> in a distinctive live edge wood siding which found limited popularity in the 1930s. The main entrance is located in a three- <br /> sided, conical roofed vestibule at the junction of the two sections and contains an arched wooden door. The entrance is <br /> fronted by a stone stoop and steps. An exterior stone fireplace is located at the end of the longer section, near the glazed <br /> sunporch which rests on a stone foundation. Windows include 6/6 sash and doublehung windows displaying diamond panes <br /> in the upper sash over a single light lower sash. There is a hip dormer above the entrance and a wood-shingled shed dormer <br /> has been added at the rear of the house. <br /> The house is set uphill on a wooded lot behind 15 Robbins Road. Across from the house is a gablefront garage (MHC <br /> #1115),also clad in live edge wood siding and set on a concrete foundation. The original garage doors are stored inside the <br /> garage. Each panel displays 3 x 2-lights over two vertical panels. Remaining fenestration consists of 6/1 windows. <br /> About fifty feet from the house at the top of the hill in the back yard are the remains of the East Lexington stone water tower. <br /> HISTORICAL NARRATIVE <br /> Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and <br /> the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. <br /> This house was constructed for Douglas and Katherine Gleason in 1931 on lot 85 of the Lexington Heights subdivision. <br /> Directories indicate that Gleason was employed as an electrician.
