MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Area(s) Form No. MASSACHUSETTS ARCHIVES BUILDING 370 220 MORRISSEY BOULEVARD BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02125 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This house was one of a handful of dwellings constructed on Meriam Hill in 1887 on lots that were sold by D. W. Muzzey(see also 16, 20, 23 &25 Oakland Street). On June 17, 1887 the Lexington Minute-man reported that"Mr. A.E. Locke has commenced operations for the building of his new house on Oakland street. Mr. McKinnon is the contractor". About a month later the paper noted"The foundation for Mr.A.E. Locke's house,which is in the course of erection on Oakland street, is almost completed and will be ready before many days for the superstructure. The location is a very sightly and desirable one, on land opposite the residence of Mr. Bliss. Mr. Ed.McNamara is the contractor for the foundation work and Mr. McKinnon is the builder"(Lexington Minute-man,July 22, 1887). This house was constructed by Alonzo E. Locke in anticipation of his wedding to Alice Hastings Butters which took place on November 17, 1887. In 1910 the Locke household included Mr. and Mrs. Locke,their three sons and three servants. Mrs. Locke was still living in the house in 1932. The house was vacant in 1942. Later owners included William VanVliet and J. Alan and Sidney Cooper.
