BUILDING FORM (83 North Hancock Street)
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
Located roughly opposite Linmoor Terrace, 83 North Hancock Street is a modest, early 20th century, 1 1/2-story,hip-roofed
dwelling which is set above a rusticated concrete block foundation and covered in stucco. The house is rectangular in plan
and oriented with its narrow end to the street, largely obscured by plantings. The asphalt-shingled hip roof displays exposed
rafters and each of the long side slopes has a four-bay long, hip roof dormer sheathed in wood shingles with the same exposed
rafter detail.
The main entrance to the house is located at the front right corner of the house and consists of a recessed porch, now
screened. The predominant window is a 6/1 sash. A secondary entrance and deck is located at the rear.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building and
theole(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Thi)house was constructed for Frank and Ina Cutter in 1916. Town lists indicate that the Cutters were living at 5 Hancock
Street in 1916 and on North Hancock in 1917. The 1917 Town Valuation lists gives the house a value of$3000. Frank
Cutter was employed as a civil engineer and continued to live here until about 1940. The house was purchased by Clifford
and Lily Taylor about 1945 and the Taylors still own the house today.
BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES
Lexington Directories, various years.
Lexington, Town of.
