The fagade is spanned by a four-bay porch supported by Doric columns, which are echoed
by pilasters set against the wall at each end of the porch and simple stick balusters. The offcenter entrance has a glass-and-panel
door that is flanked by sidelights. On one side there is a pair of 2/1 windows with a smaller 2/1 on the other. In addition to the
original 2/1 windows there is an arched window on the north elevation and 1/1 replacement sash in the hip dormers. A 2 '/z-story
pedimented bay projects from the south elevation. The original single-story ell has been expanded over the years and there is a
secondary entrance with stairs on the south side as well as a modern picture window.
Behind the house is a large two-story,hip-roofed outbuilding which has seen an addition on the south side and modern overhead
garage doors.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s)the
owners/occupants played within the community.
This house was built for Edward Mara(b.1876)in the early years of the 20th century. A brief mention in the Lexington Minute-
man on July 6, 1907 announced:
Mr. Edw. Mara, the well known house painter, is building a house on Muzzey street, on a lot of land purchased from the
Rollins estate, which was some years ago the property of Geo. F. Jones, deceased.
On August 10, 1907 the paper noted that"A.C. Washburn, the carpenter and builder, is busy this summer as usual. He is
building Mr. Edw. H. Mara's house on Muzzey street".
The town history indicates that Edward Mara married Gertrude Dacey on October 30, 1907. The couple was still living here in
1930 with their five children.
BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES
Hudson, Charles. History of the Town of Lexington.
