BUILDING FORM (27 Edgewood Road) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. Designed by local Lexington architect Willard Brown and constructed in 1929, 27 Edgewood Road is representative of a phase of the Colonial Revival style in which designs were loosely based on historical precedents. The 2 1/2-story, side-gabled dwelling displays a Georgian-style entrance centered on the three-bay facade. Fronted by granite steps, the six-panel door is flanked by fluted pilasters and capped by transom lights with a plain frieze and pediment. The house is sheathed in wood shingles and rests on a concrete foundation with an asphalt-shingled roof. On either side of the entrance there is an 8/8 window with entablature lintel and shutters. On the second floor of the facade 6/6 windows without lintels extend to the eaves. The side elevations display a saltbox profile. On the east side of the house there is a gabled, screened porch with arched openings set above a lower level. Projecting from the west elevation is a single-story, side-gabled wing. Punctuating the facade is a door with adjacent 2 x 2-light window. To the west is a segmentally-arched surround with keystone filled with vertical board doors with iron strapwork. Still further to the west is a single-story garage displaying three elevated three-light windows on the front. The house is set atop a stone outcropping shaded by several large oak trees. The 1929 Lexington Valuation List assesses the heirs of Margaret G. Brown of Arlington for Lot 6 on Edgewood Road with an area of 27,500 square feet. In 1930 the heirs were assessed for a house valued at$7,500 on the same parcel, indicating it had been built the previous year. Directories indicate that Ronald D. Brown was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. The house was later owned by Ronald and Ethel Brown from 1976 to 1989. In 1989 the property was transferred to Margaret Christie.
