Meeting Minutes
Community Center Task Force
Meeting March 20, 2012
Date:
Members in Laura Hussong, Chair
Attendance: Jim Goell, Vice Chair
Sophia Ho, Florence
Koplow, Lisah
Rhodes
Meeting Time / Ellen Stone Room, Cary
Location Hall
Liaisons in Nancy Adler, LWV
Attendance: Chris Ammer, FCaryLib
Michelle Ciccolo, Planning
Jane Trudeau, FCOA
Absent: Tim Dugan, Betty Guest: Victoria Buckley,
Borghesani Lexington Commission on
Disability
We were delighted to have Victoria Buckley come to the meeting! We wanted to know how the
CC could serve the disabled population. Universal design... such that anyone could access all
parts of the place. The message overall is that people with disabilities have the same interests
and desires as everyone else, so we need to make sure they can access everything. Improving
signage, for example, would help non - English speakers as well as the disabled.
People with disabilities, especially those over 22 (when they age out of funded education
programs) want sociability and inclusion, and to feel welcome when they go someplace.
Veterans attend our programs and those at the Bedford VA.
Victoria mentioned that the percentage of people with disabilities in Lexington could be as high
as 20 %! There might be a way to link up with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission to
offer job and schooling help at the community center. She thought interest would begin
intergenerational bridging programs. We should bring our survey to Douglas Home when we
have it ready .
After Victoria, Michelle and Lisah presented their work on comparable communities. They
currently have about 40 towns on the list and they want to pare it to 10 -15 . There are ways to do
but they aren't sure yet which data items to exclude. The next step for them is to decide which
factors are the most important so we can get to a list with only 10 -15 comparable towns.
Michelle suggested that when we get the list that we submit it to the Board of Selectmen to have
them give it an ok.
We ran out of time to discuss the questions and will take them up at a meeting, on 3/29.
The committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes of the February 29, 2012 meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 9 : 3 0pm. Respectfully submitted, Laura Hussong
