Transportation Advisory Committee
Date: March 22, 2010
Members Present: Sara Arnold, Elaine Dratch, Larry Link, Francine Stieglitz
Guests: Nancy Adler, COA and Richard Canale, Planning Board liaison
Staff: Gail Wagner
Countryside Manor Rezoning TDM Terms
➢ Lexpress will receive a total of $75,000.
➢ Carl sought input from Sara and Gail as to the extent of the Lexpress service
commitment. The following statement was submitted: "Lexpress will serve the facilities
a minimum of two years after which ridership will be evaluated and the Town will work
with the condo association to achieve a reasonable level of service based on demand."
➢ A green area at the corner of Lowell Street and Woburn will receive $25,000 for
improvements.
➢ Sidewalks connecting Woburn Street to Lowell Street will be constructed.
➢ Richard felt the TDM terms were reasonable.
➢ Francine expressed neighbors' concerns that extensive development would adversely
impact their neighborhood.
Town Meeting - Article 2 Report by TAC
➢ TAC usually gives an Article 2 Report. However, this year Town Meeting is trying to
limit reports and it was suggested that a written summary replace a floor presentation.
➢ Issues raised for inclusion in a TAC report: Countryside Manor "residential" TDM terms
worked well. Town should conduct TMO studies similar to Hartwell Ave to understand
growth issues in residential areas not just commercial; TAC outreach to other Town
committees; Diamond School after - school trial extension.
COA Transportation Issues — Nancy Adler
➢ Interested in ways COA can promote Lexpress among seniors.
➢ Nancy is working with Margaret Cole and Hope Place to assess transportation needs and
to promote options among seniors. Margaret and Hope have had several discussions with
Gail regarding Lexpress and senior riders.
➢ Human Service Director, Charlotte Rogers, Senior Services Coordinator, Barbara
Deveau, and COA are working on a June transportation event at the Senior Center. A
dialogue to review existing travel options and identified gaps is anticipated.
➢ Senior travel needs have changed in past 30 years since Lexpress began. Like most
Lexington residents, seniors prefer travel by private automobile.
➢ Seniors should not be singled out as a group, but rather encouraged through positive
messages. Example: Pick one day to try a new travel mode. Behavior changes slowly. It
is a process.
➢ There is a need to maximize transportation resources. If they are not used, they will be
lost. Public education should be ongoing.
➢ Lexington at Home is a group of senor residents working to identify services to maintain
current at home lifestyle. Transportation is an issue of concern. Nancy has been invited
to meet with this group.
Recorder: Gail Wagner
Editor: Sara Arnold
