2020 Vision Committee
October 14, 2010
7:45 a.m.-9:00 a.m.
Selectmen’s Meeting Room

Members present: Peter Enrich, Janice Frascatore, Bhumip Khasnabish, Barry Orenstein, Alan Wrigley,
George Burnell, Richard Canale, Dan Krupka, Marian Cohen, Chuck Benson, Peter Lee
Staff: Candy McLaughlin, Brianna Olson

ACTION ITEMS:

Fernando and Candy will draft an outreach letter to organizations inviting creation of focus
groups. Brianna will follow up with 2009 Lexington Citizens’ Academy graduates using an
online scheduling application; Bhumip will follow up with IAL; and Peter Lee will follow
up with CAAL.

Subcommittee will follow up on DCTF report according to committee charge.

Meeting Began:
7:45 a.m.
The minutes from last month’s meeting were approved.

Fall/Winter Outreach Agenda:
Creating focus groups by reaching out to pre-established
organizations will connect 2020 Vision to a variety of perspectives in the community. People with
shared interests who know each other may find it easier is to have productive discussions within a
limited time frame than a group of disparate individuals. Focus group participants will be asked to
share their own thoughts on the issues being discussed and not speak only from the organization’s
perspective. Fernando will send a letter to each group describing the Committee’s goal for the
focus groups, and a Committee member will follow up with each group. We will attempt to
schedule several before the holidays – Brianna will follow up with 2009 Lexington Citizens’
Academy graduates, Bhumip will follow up with IAL, and Peter Lee will follow up with CAAL.

The committee reviewed and refined the structured questions to be asked of each focus group, and
discussed additional logistics. It was determined that the focus groups would last for
approximately 1 ½ hours, and that 2020 Vision members would facilitate the focus group to ensure
that each focus group question was given time for discussion. There will be one facilitator and two
recorders for each focus group, and refreshments will be provided. The Committee will report back
to each focus group with a summary of their comments.

DCTF Follow-up Subcommittee:
Dan, Marian and Janice previously volunteered to follow up on
some of the findings and recommendations of the Demographic Change Task Force. To comply
with the revised Open Meeting Law, the Committee charged them as an official 2020 Vision
subcommittee to:

Update the report with new Census data

Look into obtaining additional data, possibly with MAPC/MIT

Outreach to groups in the community

Recommend any additional next steps to Committee

Adjourn:
9:00 a.m.
Next Meeting:
Friday, November 19, 2010, 7:45 a.m.
