Annual Report 2007 Lexington Community Education <br />ROLE: To offer lifelong learning to all by providing practi- <br />cal, creative, and enjoyable educational opportunities at rea- <br />sonable cost. Courses for adults are offered in three sessions: <br />winter, spring and fall. Classes are offered Monday through <br />Friday, with most evening classes held at Lexington High <br />School. <br />The summer program for children, LEXPLORATIONS, <br />provides academic and cultural enrichment. Lexington <br />Community Education is a self- sustaining, integral part of <br />the Lexington Public school system. <br />STAFF: Director, Robin Tartaglia; Assistant Director, <br />Andrea Paquette; Administrative Assistant, Caroline <br />Ronten. <br />HIGHLIGHTS: <br />• Began administration of Lexington High School driver's <br />education program on Sept. 1 st. This program, which is to <br />be taught by licensed instructors from Cam's Auto School <br />of Waltham, will reach approximately 300 high school <br />students annually. <br />• Collaborated with LHS music teacher Jeff Leonard on the <br />administration of the new private instrument lesson pro- <br />gram. Sixteen professional musicians teach approximately <br />200 students of all ages. <br />• Registered 3,636 students for LCE classes. This number <br />includes all registrations from the three adult education <br />semesters and the summer children's program. <br />• Offered many new adult classes, including Writing Your <br />First Novel, Skid School, Antiques Appraisal Night, How <br />To Probate a Will, Is Solar Right For You ?, Meditation for <br />Kids, Tango, Yoga With a Chair, and Green Home <br />Remodeling. New after - school classes for young children <br />were offered in Mandarin, Korean Culture, Egyptian Art <br />and more. Also new this year was an after - school big band <br />program, Jazz in the Middle, for students in middle <br />school. <br />• Continued to offer the very popular HOME ALONE class <br />which attracted 140 students. Taught by Lexington Police <br />Department officers, this class teaches children nine years <br />old and above how to maximize their security when alone <br />at home. This class is offered at no charge as a service to <br />the community. <br />• Held 92 weeklong classes and 1,130 registrations with <br />Lexplorations, the summer academic enrichment program. <br />New programs include Into the Garden, Fun with Mrs. <br />Frizzle, Batty for Bats, Math Mania, Digital Photography, <br />Myths, Printmaking, Code Breakers, and more.
