Traffic Safety Advisory Committee <br />ROLE: To advise the Selectmen on traffic safety issues. The <br />Police Department reviews residents' traffic concerns to assess <br />safety levels and to develop recommendations that may require <br />consultation with staff from the engineering, planning, or <br />school departments. Unresolved traffic safety concerns are <br />scheduled for a public meeting presided over by the Traffic <br />Safety Advisory Committee. The Board of Selectmen reviews <br />meeting reports and recommendations. Recommendations <br />approved by the Selectmen requiring signs or markings are for- <br />warded to the Department of Public Works for implementation, <br />and code changes are forwarded to the Town Clerk's Office. <br />APPOINTED by the Selectmen: Stephen Ades, Steve Frymer, <br />Sudhir Murthy, Stefan Schatzki, Martha Batten ( School <br />Department), Captain Charles Sargent (Police Department), <br />David Cannon (Engineering), Gail Wagner (Transportation <br />Services) . <br />w <br />ftj <br />�r r <br />CDL <br />rD <br />Qa <br />From left to rigb t: <br />Arnold, Bill Leviso <br />Danny Moraff, Gail Wagner. <br />Sally Castleman, Hank Manz, Sara <br />n, Elaine Dratcb, Francine Stieglitz, <br />HIGHLIGHTS: <br />• Installed Stop Signs Ivan Street at Eldred Street (east and <br />west bound). <br />• Installed signage and crosswalks for the new NSTAR <br />parking lot off Edison Way. <br />• Installed 2 hour parking signs at the end of Clark Street <br />adjacent to Center Playground. <br />• Installed No Parking signs on Grapevine Avenue at <br />Waltham Street. <br />• Installed No Outlet sign on Wingate Road at Diana Lane. <br />• Installed Emergency Stopping Only signs on Adams Street <br />in front of Fiske School. <br />• Installed crosswalk signage on Massachusetts Avenue at <br />Tower Road. <br />• Installed crosswalks signage on Lowell Street near <br />Harrington School driveway. <br />• Installed crosswalk signage on Massachusetts Avenue at <br />Locust Avenue. <br />• Installed Traffic Officer Ahead 4:30 pm —5:30 pm signage <br />on Massachusetts Avenue at Wood Street. <br />• Installed Loading Zone signage at Depot Square alley <br />leading to Meriam Street. <br />Ad Hoc Committee on Engine Run -Ups <br />ROLE: To study issues related to engine idling and to rec- <br />ommend whether Town Meeting should adopt anti- idling <br />regulations. <br />APPOINTED by the Town Moderator: Co- Chairs Anthony <br />Galaitsis and Ingrid Klimoff, Judy Crocker, Tom Diaz, Anne <br />Kelly, Jeanne Krieger, Sheryl Mason, Jim Sheehy, Jim Wilson. <br />Board of Health and Town Staff liaison: Derek Fullerton. <br />HIGHLIGHTS: <br />The Committee engaged in the following activities: <br />• Held monthly full- committee meetings and several sub- <br />committee meetings. <br />• Continued the review of relevant documents on engine <br />idling and engine emissions found in the open literature <br />and in regulations by other communities. <br />• Continued the implementation of an anti - idling education <br />program through newspaper ads, "green tickets" distrib- <br />uted as friendly reminders to engine idlers, and communi- <br />cations with school personnel. <br />• Coordinated the production and installation of anti - idling <br />signs, whose production was funded by a grant from a <br />local business. <br />• Produced a report for the 2007 Town Meeting in support <br />of Article 16 of the Town Warrant. <br />• Presented Article 16 to the community during a public <br />hearing. <br />• Presented Article 16 to the 2007 Town Meeting, during <br />which a Town anti- idling bylaw was approved. <br />• Upon completion of its work, the Committee was dis- <br />solved by the Town Moderator. <br />2007 Annual Report, Town of Lexington Page 29 <br />
