� 4- <br />Mr. White explained that one container for recycled trash will be No w <br />distributed to each household in the Town. N.E. Crinc and the Waste <br />Management Task Force will develop information and guidelines on the <br />program for town -wide distribution. He added that office staff in the <br />Town office Building will participate in a pilot program for recycling <br />of paper products. <br />TOWN /SCHOOL DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM <br />Mr. White reported on the roles of the School Administration and <br />the Police Department in prevention of drug and alcohol use by students <br />in the Lexington Public Schools. Chief Furdon, Crime Prevention <br />Officer Joseph O'Leary, Lt. Stephen Corr and Supt, of Schools Philip <br />Geiger were present to inform the Board of plans for a program for drug <br />and alcohol prevention and to review a flow chart prepared to show <br />recommended school procedure and response in drug /alcohol related <br />incidents which included, for the first time, a formal role for the <br />Police Department in dealing with substance abuse in the schools. <br />Mr. White said that the program represented a good f irst step in <br />the establishment, in a positive way, of cooperation between the Town <br />and the School Department. <br />Dr. Geiger, expressed his gratitude to the Manager and the <br />Selectmen for their efforts in establishing a bond with the School <br />Department. He outlined steps which had been taken and are planned to <br />combat the use of drugs and alcohol in the school and noted Acting <br />Principal David Wilson's important contribution to the process. <br />He reported that Chief Furdon and officer O'Leary will meet with <br />the school staff to instruct them in procedures for dealing with the <br />problem. Dr. Geiger thanked the Town Manager for his cooperation and <br />complimented Chief Furdon and his staff for their interest in the <br />students and for the manner in which the problem is being addressed. On <br />behalf of the School Committee, he thanked the Board for the partnership <br />being formed. <br />Chief Furdon noted the acceleration in efforts toward crime <br />prevention in his department and reported that Joseph O'Leary will now, <br />as Crime Prevention Officer, be directing that program full -time. He <br />felt that his department's strong commitment to crime prevention will be <br />reinforced by the School /Town program, noting that drug and alcohol use <br />is behind a major portion of crimes committed. <br />Officer O'Leary explained that as full time Crime Prevention <br />Officer, he will be dealing with drug and alcohol abuse and its effects <br />such as vandalism and other crimes, for a large percentage of his time, <br />which can be spent planning programs and coordinated attacks on the <br />problem. He will spend as much time as is allowed in the High and <br />Middle Schools, and hopes in the future, to speak to the Elementary <br />Schools, as well. He plans to involve Youth commission members in his <br />work with students. <br />Officer O'Leary complimented the Youth Commission, which had worked <br />throughout the summer with Selectman McSweeney on development of the <br />program. <br />Mrs. Smith, on behalf of the Board, thanked the Police Department, moo <br />School Department, the Youth Commission, and Mr. McSweeney for their <br />commitment to the program to combat drug and alcohol use and for the <br />information presented on the coordinated plans to be implemented. <br />
