1 <br />_3- <br />Selectmen's Meeting <br />January 15, 1996 <br />Oft <br />Chief Furdon reported the 19 weak Police Academy training, which is <br />given at no cost other than for materials and salaries of recruits. <br />Regarding the hiring of women and minorities, Chief Furdon reported the <br />hiring of two women, adding that he would hire more if available. In an <br />effort to add to the list of minorities, a list of applicants will be <br />obtained from State Civil Service. <br />Other areas, such as disability retirement, adequacy of EMT equipment <br />and overtime expenses were discussed briefly and the scope of computer <br />programs Being utilized described. <br />Mr. Marshall asked for a written report on increased services of the <br />Police Department for presentation, with its expense budget, to Town <br />Meeting. It was suggested information and data on violations be publicized <br />in the Town Report in summary form. <br />Chief Furdon was thanked for his informative presentation, <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT BUDGET <br />Chief Bergeron was present for review of his Department's Expense <br />Budget #4154 requests in the amount of $152,400± up 6.6% from last year. He <br />gave a capsulized summary of the Fire Department's activities such as fire <br />prevention; rescue services; EMT; Ambulance service; hazardous materials <br />services; the Right -to -Know law; Civil Defense Agency and dealing with the <br />Hazardous Substances Committee. <br />The Chief reported that he is making no capital requests this year. <br />The ambulance, funded last year, is in operation and he noted that there is <br />mandatory flexibility training and that a Cardio Vascular fitness program is <br />available. With regard to hurricane "Gloria ". he noted that more than 64 <br />calls for help had been received. A Federal Disaster Grant application has <br />been coordinated, <br />Material was distributed showing the personnel setup; per capita <br />expenditure for Fire Protection; number of residents per uniformed <br />personnel; comparison of Fire Dept. manning in other communities; total fore <br />and ambulance calls and goals for FY97 recapped. <br />Under the Fire Dept. Expense budget, an additional car, for use by the <br />Asst. Chief is requested.\ <br />Regarding sprinklering, Chief Bergeron reported that all new commercial <br />buildings and approximately 1/2 of the older buildings have the <br />installations. <br />There had been 47 street box alarms, 41 had proven to be false alarms <br />and the remainder had been called in by telephone. <br />The Chief reported that he encourages applications by minorities and <br />women, but at this time only one Hispanic is on the staff. One woman had <br />been employed but has left for other employment. <br />As with the Police Department, performance statistics for the Fire <br />Department will be provided to Town Meeting, <br />The Board complimented Chief Bergeron on the scope of his report on <br />Fire Dept, activities and thanked him for his budget presentation s <br />
