Selectmen's Meeting I j () -5- <br />September 24, 1984 <br />As suggested by the Town Manager a meeting will be scheduled on October <br />- 15 with the School Committee for discussion of mutual concerns. Among topics <br />for discussion will be budgetting targets, -and other f inancial matters per- <br />taining to both Town and School. The Manager recommended that State & Federal <br />aid to education and the . Education Bill proposed by. the State also be ex- <br />plored and that the concept of the coalition of suburban educational systems <br />be examined. <br />Mr. Sacco and Mr. Hutchinson will represent the Board at an October 3 meet- <br />ing of the coalition with Town officials of communities involved, at which <br />time the findings of the coalition regarding impact of the current fiscal <br />environment will be pre sent ed . <br />Regarding the Alice R. Ferguson Trust-, an endowment of $5,-000 in memory <br />of Charles E. Ferguson, the Chairman asked for suggestions as to appropriate <br />use of the funds. Because of Mr. Ferguson's service as Town Moderator, ways <br />to ensure linkage of Town government with the schools such as funding of a <br />Mock' <br />ock Town Meeting, were-discussed. The Manager will explore that concept <br />and will consult with Paul Hamburger, Chairman of the T MA on other possible <br />suggestions Staff was asked - to research areas of interest of Mr. Ferguson <br />which may suggest possible uses for the funds. <br />Mr. Hutchinson noted recent increase - in requests for Sunday Yard and <br />Garage Sales, which are not allowed under the Selectmen's Garage and Yard <br />Sale Policy. Mr. Cohen noted that the issue appears to be whether to revise <br />the Policy with reference to Sunday Laws, which are less restrictive than <br />the Blue Laws had been, but are st ill in effect. Mr. Marshall and Mr. Sacco <br />felt that the prohibition of Sunday sales should be continued 0' <br />Mr. Cohen was requested to report to the Board at some later - date re-, <br />garding modification of Item #1 of the Policy, which deals with Sunday sales. <br />Meet with <br />School Comm <br />Coalition <br />Ferguson <br />Trust <br />Yard Sales <br />Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was voted to accept with thanks Gif t of <br />the gift to the Town of an American flag in memory , of James E . Burke; of f Bred Fla g, Burke <br />by the Burke family.. Mrs. Batt in noted that Mary Williams, former Town employee, <br />is the daughter of Mr. Burke and expressed the appreciation of the Board at <br />Mrs. Williams t gesture. <br />Mr. McLaughlin reported briefly on suggestion that Board members, at Hats for <br />their own expense, obtain tri -corne hats with some distinctive ornament, for Selectmen <br />use at parades and other outdoor public gatherings where they appear as a group. <br />Upon motion duly made -and seconded , it was voted to authorize Mr. McLaughlin <br />to proceed with exploration of the matter, for presentation to the members in <br />the near future. <br />Upon motion duly made and seconded , it was voted to sign a document amend- Traf f is <br />ing traffic Rules and orders, permitting installation of signs at Hartwell orders <br />Avenue and Maguire Road, as. a saf ety measure.
